This is the first book in a 15 or 16 book series that I think is ongoing. The character has a fun voice- she’s a tough lady from New Jersey. It’s one of those paperback mystery novels that you find in the drug store about a young woman who becomes a bounty hunter and has all of these attractive guys falling in love with her all the time. They’re a good read and despite the fact that I really, really, really am not a Katherine Heigl fan I think it will be exciting to see her play someone who isn’t a hyperventilating girly girl.

The Help

From IMDB: A look at what happens when a southern town’s unspoken code of rules and behavior is shattered by three courageous women who strike up an unlikely friendship.

Expected Release Date: August 12 2011

Missing from the photo is Emma Stone, who starred in one of my favourite movies of 2010- Easy A. She is the third star of this huge cast that follows three women who live in a small town in Mississippi. It’s a character driven novel which I’m sure a lot of book clubs read and moms opened on christmas morning. The voices are really strong and I think it will translate to the screen almost painlessly.

The Adjustment Bureau

From IMDB: The affair between a politician and a ballerina is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart. The trailer is way cooler.

This is technically based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick called Adjustment Team which I haven’t read, but the concept looks way awesome. Way to go Matt Damon! I tried to find the script on the internet but no dice. Looks like I’ll just have to be entertained on March 4th like the rest of you suckers.

Looks Good. Haven’t read the book. Writers are never as good looking as Bradley Cooper but the rest sounds like recipe for a fun action movie.

Water for Elephants

From IMDB: A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.

Expected Release Date: April 22 2001

The book was a real snooze and the cast looks kind of wonky.

What’s Your Number

From IMDB: A woman looks back at the past twenty men she’s had relationships with in her life and wonders if one of them might be her one true love.

Expected Release Date: April 29 2011

The original book title was “Twenty Times a Lady” and came out in the Sophie Kinsella driven chick-lit phase of the early 2000s. It’s funny that I’ve read it because I don’t think it was extremely popular at all. But the film has a fun cast (Anna Faris is the lead.) I question the IMDB description because the book was about a woman who had 20 uhm, relations with men, if you get my drift. Definitely not relationships. It’s definitely a story that could have been changed a lot during the adaptation process. We’ll see!

Something Borrowed

Known widely as more ‘literary’ in style than most other chick-lit offerings of the early 2000′s, Something Borrowed is kind of an annoying read. It’s interesting and the characters are realistic though, if you can get past the attempt at making an overdone topic melodramatically ‘intelligent’ it’s good enough. The movie should be fun to watch though. Ginnifer Goodwin is the hero and I, personally like being on her side. Maybe it’s because she’s kind of funny looking. The screenplay is being adapted as a first feature by a TV writer so it could be really interesting and possibly a bit unconventional.

Moneyball

From IMDB: The story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget, by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.

I have a dependency problem. It ends today.

For a long time my mom has told me that I have a real ‘this is stupid’ look on my face and that I’m not good at seeming enthustiastic about anything.

This and our socieites new reliance on text messages created a problem for me. Despite that fact that I will, in four months time, hopefully have a Masters Degree in Creative Writing, I’m not good at replying to my friends plans, making plans, wishing people a Happy ___ or anything without !

Secondubitably, some of us don’t always remember to be afraid of what our hair looks like. We like to think about other things like what that text message that boy sent us last night asking us to return that book we borrowed means. (Even though, deep down our logic is telling us that boy wants his book back). Or how we’re ever going to get our second draft finished instead of what our hair looks like every second of the day. To this, I will say, whoops?

However, there is a recent phenomenon which has descended upon me where I forget to brush my hair after I shower and I just put it up. This used to be ok because I used to use conditioner. But then I really wanted to buy this seven dollar shampoo because it said it would make my blonde hair MORE VIBRANT. WOAH. I said. This is good stuff. I didn’t have fourteen dollars for the shampoo and the conditioner so I just bought the shampoo thinking I was going to have the prettiest MOST VIBRANT blonde hair on the block.

Here’s the thing. Conditioner is like racism. It keeps your hair apart. When you shampoo and condition your hair, your head turns into a tragic love story where all the hairs are apart but shimmering with desire to be together.

When you only shampoo your hair, you hair is all like, sweet, let’s be friends. Let’s stay together forever! Let’s be so close we form DREADLOCKS!

And then you can’t brush your hair out. You have to wear a hat to school or your hair up.

You’re encouraged by your roommates boyfriend who tells you you look like a lion. Sweet, you think, that’s what I wanted to be when I was seven. Who said all childhood dreams have to be stomped on?

So you know, you just kind of… go with it. It’s not like there’s a sexy man waiting outside to take you out and run his fingers through your hair (though I’m sure there’s a weirdo out there who wants to pick apart my tangles like a chimp. Someone who enjoys a good puzzle).

Then you go home and take your hat off and your mom’s like WHAT and your sister is laughing so hard she can’t breath and then they sit your down and you almost cry while they yank the knots out and your mom calls you a wimp and says “never have children, YOU’LL DIE” and you think good, we’re finally on the same page.

Anyway, so this brings me to New Years Resolution Numero Uno. Remember to shower, condition and brush hair. It just makes things easier in the long run.

This is one of those things that really makes me cheesed off about being a girl. There’s so much UPKEEP. It’s like being a car.

Hype machine is the greatest. There is nothing else like it in the entire world. Basically it tracks music blogs for you so you can hear all the songs the second some baby sneezes them out onto the internet. It makes you feel COOL, because when everyone is like OMG KANYES ALBUM IS SO GOOD, you can be like, hey yeah, I used to like that in February when it leaked online for fifteen seconds and hype machine caught it for me.  It’s basically like owning a musical time machine.

10.) Vampire Weekend- Horchata

Night time bus rides home during the Olympics. Vampire Weekend you are good company.  Here comes a feeling you thought you’d forgotten.

9.) Bowerbirds- Northern Lights

This song actually came out in 2009, but it might have been the only song that I listened to in March. The album is pretty melancholy but this song has some balls to it. They really take it away at the end. And the passion! the passion!

8.) Dan Mangan- Fair Verona

I first saw Dan Mangan at the Vancouver Folk Festival in 2009 which was around the time which he released his album but I didn’t get a copy until February 2010. His set is widely recognized as being the strongest rock out of that weekend. This song is my favourite because it has a laid back beat with some really adorable lyrics. Dan Mangan is like the most adorable reindeer who is the best flier in the sky, too.

7.) Michael Bernard Fitzgerald- Reach You

Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is another Canadian musician that I started listening to in 2010. He has one of the most unique voices that I’ve heard in a while and he makes really unique solo-dude-with-a-guitar music. I’m pretty sure he does the looping his bad self, thing at his live show and some friends saw him perform with a choir at the Pit at UBC which they called a magical performance. When I saw him live he mashed up his music with flo rida’s apple bottom jeans. I was also wearing a zombie costume so it was a good day.

6.) Ludacris- Sexting

Ludacris is probably one of my favourite rappers of all time. He is hilarious, and this track ‘sexting’ where he pretends to be Tiger Woods in rehab for his sex addiction, trying to nail his therapist is one of the best hip hop releases of 2010. Especially because the pre-chorus is entirely in netspeak.

5.) Tinashe-A-Liar

My friend Esther went to Scotland and sent me this youtube video of a Brit originally from Zimbabwe who makes some really innovative pop music. He also has a kick ass voice and his drummer plays a cardboard box which is my favourite instrument in the entire world.

4.) The Tallest Man on Earth- You’re Going Back

I’ve been obsessed with The Tallest Man on Earth who is actually just this little itty bitty swedish guy, since Summer 2009. He is gravelly and dope. I spent my summer vacation this year exclusively listening to his albums on repeat. I haven’t obsessed like that since the great Taylor Hanson crush of 1999. Oh yes.

Now I’m not a baby, or a wimp or someone who likes to complain about things. But man, was 2010 filled with rejection. Literary magazines, film festivals and men. Though to devil’s advocate myself, I’m not entirely sure this is a moment for apathy. I fear cynicism, taking shelter in complacency. It makes my writing suck. Cynicism is for the weak and fearful. I think I may have stolen that sentence from somewhere. So here’s to you, VIFF, CIFF,TIFF, WIFF, VSFF, to the glass blowers and the long boarders and the computer science majors and the engineers. Here’s to the Vancouver Review, Descant and Geist. Here’s to me mourning all of those rejections and trying my hardest to care more then I have let myself. Here’s to giving a shit in 2011.

WAIT A MINUTE, you’re saying. That’s not a word. You are one hundred percent incorrect. I get to invent at least one word for 2010 and it may as well be an adverb, the weakest kind of word in the entire world. So whip out those dictionaries and pencil it in!

The greatest part of 2010, for me, was meeting a whole bunch of new friends who are fantastic and fun and sexy and smart and all shades of guhrreat and becoming closer friends with old friends, talking to friends I haven’t seen in a while like new friends, keeping up connections with friends that I miss and losing about one hundred pounds of neuroses and gaining it all back in beer belly all because of you and you and you.
